The case is set out in five lessons:

The pupil is introduced to the nature of marsupial birth and development as the basis of this case, and gains an overview of the whole learning sequence and its intended outcomes. The scenario is presented. Video clips and photos are made available and there are several sources of background information about kangaroos and their development at the Background on Kangaroos page and in Teacher Resources.

By the end of this lesson, the pupil should be able to:

• explain the unusual nature of the marsupial birth and development process,
• use data provided to illustrate the nature of marsupial development compared to other more common species – such as by comparing birth to adult weight ratios in the Animal Data provided.
• appreciate the unusual size of a new born marsupial compared to other mammals and how this may effect the factors that someone would need to consider when rescuing an orphaned joey.

Pupils should be provided with the opportunity to reflect at the beginning and end of each lesson. They should maintain a record of their learning development in their Record Booklets. Through this, they should develop an awareness of:

• differences between this approach and the usual approach to learning mathematics,
• the intended outcomes of this sequence of learning activities.
